Homeopathic Remedies for Childbirth: What to Pack in Your Birthing Bag

I made this “Diaper Cake” as a centerpiece for my daughter’s baby shower. The expectation of a new baby is a time of both nervous anticipation and joyous excitement!

Homeopathy is a God-given tool that can help women through the pain and suffering of childbirth.

To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children…” Genesis 3:16a

I recently had the joy of attending the birth of my fifth grandchild! I was invited by my daughter and son-in-law to be a part of the birth of their third child, both in the role of “grandma,” and as my daughter’s homeopathy coach. As “grandma” I was there to offer love and support. As the homeopathy coach, I came prepared with the knowledge and tools to assist my daughter through the miraculous process of childbirth.

Although I am not a healthcare professional, nor a professional homeopath, I took my job as homeopathy coach very seriously. The midwife was very open to my help and very impressed with my knowledge and the tools that I came prepared with, which included several homeopathy kits, my notes and books. I brought some non-homoeopathic natural birthing tools as well.

A woman’s body was designed by God to be able to grow and birth a baby.

The Bible teaches us that because of sin and the Fall of Creation, childbirth would always be difficult and painful. I’m sure that’s why we call it “Labor.” Certainly, different women experience different levels of pain and difficulty, but all experience some. In God’s goodness, He has provided many tools to help us through our pain and suffering, and this includes homeopathy for childbirth.

I have written about my daughter’s previous childbirth experience here: Homeopathy is Amazing for Childbirth . With her second child the labor was very efficient. Each homeopathic remedy that she took seemed to help her manage the pain, stay focused, and direct her body to be able to deliver the baby. The total birth was five hours from start to finish. It seemed to me that homeopathy had been the key to such a relatively fast and “easy” labor.  Although her contractions were strong and painful, it was apparent that she was revived and able to regain focus each time she took the appropriate homeopathic remedy. I will admit that after experiencing that childbirth with my daughter, I was convinced that the next labor would be even better.

Every childbirth is different.

We expected that since her previous labor was so fast, this birth would be as fast or faster. It shouldn’t have surprised us that our expectations were wrong. This labor was closer to 20 hours from start to finish. Her “Second Stage” and “Transitional Stage” combined, lasted about 8 hours. That was a very LONG eight hours for sure!

Why didn’t homeopathy seem to work as well this time?

Many of us who use homeopathy have seen it do some amazing things. There are times when it is absolutely miraculous in how quickly and completely it can help restore wellness and health. But we live in a Fallen Creation, and clearly homeopathy is part of the Fall. I will admit that as my daughter’s labor dragged on and on, I felt a little disappointed in homeopathy and in myself that I wasn’t seeing the miraculous results that I was expecting.

Every childbirth is different. One of the biggest differences this time was that my daughter went into labor already tired and worn down from dealing with a flu-like sickness in her family. Prior to going into labor, she had been up for several nights with her other children, nursing them back to health. We can only speculate as to which factors may have contributed to a longer and more painful labor this time. Could it have been the exhaustion and stress of caring for other sick children, the position of the baby, other unknown reasons? We’ll never know. What we do know is that although the labor was long and difficult, both mother and baby came through healthy and with no complications. For that we are extremely grateful.

Discussing it afterward with my daughter, we both agreed that we are sure that homeopathy helped her through this difficult labor, and may even have prevented complications. No, we didn’t see a “miraculous” revival and regain of focus with each remedy. But she was able to keep going and do what she needed to do. Her baby was born naturally and in good health. In addition, we have seen that my daughter’s recovery has been very rapid and very smooth.

Below is a list of the tools that helped us. To what degree they made a difference, we may never know!

Tips for helping with childbirth: first and foremost, own a homeopathy kit or two!

I highly recommend this 18 Homeopathic Remedy Kit for Childbirth by Helios which is well stocked with all the most important remedies in the most appropriate potencies. It also comes with a small booklet that serves as a mini- Materia Medica (description of remedies) and a mini-Repertory (list of symptoms). I referred to it often during the labor and delivery and it served us very well. I also had a basic homeopathic remedy kit and a Cell Salt Kit on hand.

The Helios Childbirth Kit has the most important remedies for childbirth in the appropriate potencies.

Must-Have Homeopathic Remedies for the Birthing Bag

Here is a list of the remedies that we used during labor, and that I recommend for the well-prepared birthing bag. I stayed primarily with 200c potencies, because labor is intense. The Helios Childbirth Kit includes only 200c potencies.

  • Aconite  30c or 200c: This is a great remedy to use when mom is afraid and needs reassurance, and when remembering trauma from previous delivery brings on feelings of fear and panic.
  • Arnica 30c or 200c: This remedy is known to help soft tissue pain of any kind and can be used throughout labor for pain. A dose can be given every hour or so or during labor. This is also an excellent remedy for after-labor pain, taken every few hours or as needed for pain during recovery.
  • Bellis perennis 30c or 200c: This remedy is known for deep tissue healing and can be alternated or combined with Arnica for afterbirth pain and to speed recovery.
  • Carbo vegetablis 30c or 200c: This remedy is a good one to use for extreme weakness, sluggishness, exhaustion, and lack of stamina (known as the “corpse reviver”).
  • Caulophyllum 30c or 200c: This remedy helps with anxiety and fear of childbirth, also helps with slow or stalled labor; in addition it can be used to help deliver a delayed placenta.
  • Chamomilla 30c or 200c: This remedy is useful for painful contractions, especially when the mama feels the pain is unbearable.
  • Cimicifuga 30c or 200c: This remedy helps produce coordinated contractions and helps allay fear and anxiety. It is said that it helps the woman to trust the birth process. The mother may express that she feels trapped with no way out “I’ve got to get out of here!” She may say, that she is unable to endure labor, or something such as “I can’t take it anymore!” This labor is also for when a long labor slows down after little progress. Some midwives alternate recommend alternating Caulophyllum with Cimicicguga. I did this for much of my daughter’s labor.
  • Secale 200c: This remedy is helpful for delayed placenta.
I recommend taprootsva.com for a very affordable Top 100 Homeopathic Remedy Kit.

Homeopathic Cell Salts can be given in-between the other main childbirth remedies.

Homeopathic Cell Salts

Cell Salts are a subcategory of homeopathy. There are 12 main salts that make up the cells in the body. Homeopathic Cell Salts are used in low potencies such as 6x to help bring the body chemistry into balance. Here are the Cell Salts that we used during labor and my recommendation for how they can be used:

  • Calc fluor 6x: This Cell Salt helps with elasticity which supports dilation of the cervix. It can be used when dilation seems stalled.
  • Kali phos 6x: This is a premiere Cell Salt for intellectual, emotional and physical exhaustion. One dose can be given after each contraction.
  • Silica 6x: This Cell Salt helps the body expel what it needs to expel. We used it successfully Along with Secale 200c to help with the delayed placenta.

Bach Flower Essences are complimentary to Homeopathy and can assist with emotional struggles that lead to physical struggles.

Bach Flower Remedies

In addition to homeopathy, a Bach Flower Essence Kit is a valuable addition to any birth bag. Bach Flower Remedies are diluted like homeopathic remedies, but they do not follow the principle of the Law of Similars. Instead, flower essences are used to address emotional struggles which may lead to physical symptoms. There are 38 Bach Flower Essences, each covering a different emotional picture. The remedies can be administered by  dropping about 2 drops into a few ounces of water and sipped throughout labor as needed. Alternatively, the drops can be placed directly in the mouth as needed. It is really just a matter of preference. Here are the Bach Flower Remedies that we used:

Larch: The mother struggles with lacking self-confidence, inadequacy, expecting failure. Larch promotes confidence, self-assuredness, and self-esteem.

Olive: The mother struggles with extreme exhaustion (example- following illness, trauma, etc.). Olive promotes vitality, zest, revival.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils are another wonderful way to support the birthing mother during the process of labor and childbirth. Essential oils support positive mood and are known to contain medicinal properties that can be taken in by the body through aroma-therapy. The remedies can be diffused in a diffuser throughout labor or applied directly to the skin with a carrier oil such as coconut oil. Ask the mother her preference. My daughter appreciated having the oils lightly messaged into her legs, back and shoulders in-between contractions. There are many wonderful essential oils that can be used. Please note that any oils that contain Camphor can antidote the action of homeopathic remedies. Learn more about that here: How to Integrate Essential Oils with Homeopathy

Here are the oils that we used:

Mālama™ Nurturing Blend: Mālama is a sparkling combination of bright citrus, enchanting floral, and centering wood aromas that promotes a feeling of being nurtured and cared for.

doTERRA Cheer Touch: Creates an optimistic, cheerful atmosphere with a warm, citrusy, and spicy aroma. This roll-on is ideal for promoting an uplifting boost.

One more protocol, just in case…

Post-partum hemorrhage is something that I wanted to be prepared for. It was not an issue for us, but I think it important to mention here.

The Banerji Protocol for Hemorrhages of Any Kind is Hamamelis 200c mixed with Arnica 3c, given as needed in an emergency situation, otherwise twice a day. I learned this protocol in the Survivalist Course by Joette Calabrese. I highly recommend this course. It covers how to use homeopathy for many, many emergency situations. There is an entire module devoted to pregnancy and childbirth. It also covers pregnancy and problems that might be experienced post-partum by mother and baby.

What a joy to welcome my new baby granddaughter into the world!

I am so thankful for the healthy delivery of my granddaughter. I am also thankful for the good gifts, such as homeopathy, that God has given to help us endure the sufferings of this world.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father…” James 1:17
