My Journey to Homeopathy – Part 2: The Road Not Taken

My Journey to Homeopathy

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

from The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost

The quest for truth and answers will require you to embark on a journey.

My journey to homeopathy began in large part because of my family’s allergies. As a young mother, I did my best to keep my family healthy — but my children were prone to environmental allergies.

I tried using over-the-counter medications to treat their allergy symptoms. I would seemingly treat a symptom, and then a short time later, it came back with a vengeance. Before long, we’d end up in the pediatrician’s office, and more often than not, they were prescribed another round of antibiotics.

One antibiotic lead to another.

We were on an endless road of antibiotics. Each time I suppressed the allergy symptoms with an antihistamine or decongestant, the result would be some type of respiratory infection. As the pediatrician prescribed one antibiotic after another, after another, the symptoms grew worse. An Allergy Specialist recommended allergy shots and prescription medications. We did all the recommendations, but nothing helped.

After my four-year-old daughter underwent a surgery to have her sinuses scraped, due to constant congestion, the Ear Nose and Throat Specialist said that the surgery was unsuccessful, and that my daughter needed another surgery. I felt disheartened. I came to the realization that the doctors did not really know how to heal my children’s allergies.

I told the ENT Specialist that we would NOT be having a second surgery. I also decided that we were DONE with the allergy shots. The doctors were not happy with me at all. They attempted to shame me pretty badly as a mother for deciding that we would not continue forward with their recommendations. The Allergist actually insinuated that my child might die if I refused his treatments.

Find your courage! When you see your child worsening, it is up to you to find a better way!

But at that point, I found my courage! I knew it was up to me to find a better way. I began focusing my time and energy into learning about traditional methods of healing. With some help from other momma friends, I was able to learn a little bit about whole-food nutrition and natural alternative medicines, such as medicinal herbs and essential oils.

The journey can be long, and the road winding, but there are many things to learn along the way.

My journey to homeopathy and toward natural healing for my family was a long and winding road. After a number of years, I was introduced to the Weston A. Price Foundation. It really transformed my thinking about nutrition and traditional food preparation as a means to health. I poured myself into learning the principles of the Weston A. Price Foundation and scouring the book, Nourishing Traditions, which is really a textbook/cookbook written by Sally Fallon.

Bring your children along with you on your  journey to homeopathy.

I homeschooled all four of my children, but I needed to learn the principles of natural health. As a busy mom, I had very little time to myself during that season of life. At one point, I decided that we would just learn together. After breakfast every morning, I read to my children. As part of our lessons I began reading a few pages each day from Nourishing Traditions, so that I could learn the principles of traditional health. By reading aloud and discussing the principles with my children, they were learning right alongside me.

The answers may be right in front of you. Pray for the eyes to see!

The principles of natural health that we learned did much to improve my family’s health.  However, we came to a seemingly insurmountable roadblock after my children were grown, and my grandchildren came along. Each of my grandchildren had varying food allergies and intolerances that ranged from mild to severe. My granddaughter, in particular, had very severe, life-threatening food allergies to many common foods such as eggs, dairy, and nuts. Everything that I had learned up to that point was not enough. One day in exasperation, I cried out to the Lord, asking Him to open my eyes to whatever it was I needed to learn to be able to help my granddaughter.

Amazingly, a short time after that, I took notice of homeopath, Joette Calabrese. I was introduced to her through one of the Weston A. Price pages that I followed. Something that she posted went off like a lightbulb in my brain. It really caught my attention when I read it. She said that herbs and essential oils were her “gateway to homeopathy,” but homeopathy trumps them all.

To my delight I discovered that homeopathy was the system of medicine that I had always longed for: non-toxic, safe, natural, affordable, with no harmful side-effects, and most importantly, effective!

I had heard of homeopathy, but I thought it meant home remedies. For years, I thought the term “homeopathy” was a big umbrella for anything natural and holistic. I decided to do my research and find out everything I could about homeopathy. To my delight I discovered that homeopathy was the system of medicine that I had always longed for: non-toxic, safe, natural, affordable, with no harmful side-effects, and most importantly, effective!

This was the beginning of the next leg in my learning journey to homeopathy. The “road less traveled” has been nothing short of life-changing for me and my family. I have become passionate about learning the principles of homeopathy and helping others, especially mothers, learn how homeopathy can help keep their loved ones healthy.

Decide that you WILL learn homeopathy!

Homeopathy is a complex system of medicine. Professional homeopaths spend years in school learning the science of homeopathy. It is wise to seek the help of a professional homeopath for complicated acute and chronic health conditions. However, a dedicated student of homeopathy can learn much as a home-prescriber. I have learned how to use homeopathy to treat the common illnesses and injuries that most families face–without toxic side effects!

Let the symptoms be your roadmap.

In My Journey to Homeopathy – Part 1, I explained that for years I unknowingly used homeopathic combination remedies. These are marketed in such a way that people who know very little about homeopathy can use them safely, simply by choosing the combination remedy that is intended for a specific condition, and following the directions on the packaging. The next step in understanding homeopathy is to begin studying the individual single remedies. One of the first remedies that I learned about in my studies was homeopathic Apis mellifica.

Like cures like: homeopathic Apis mellifica is made from honeybees.

Homeopathy’s basic principle is “The Law of Similars,” also referred to as “like cures like.” It is common knowledge that every plant, mineral, and chemical, when given in overdose, can cause its own unique set of symptoms. What would cause a set of symptoms in a person who is well, will cure the same set of symptoms in a person who is not well, when given in a very small, safe dose. Therefore, with homeopathic medicines, “like cures like.”

In my granddaughter’s situation, we use homeopathic Apis mellifica to address an allergic reaction that includes swelling. Apis mellifica is made from homeopathically prepared honeybees. Homeopathic Apis  is made from the whole bee, including the stinger. It is widely known that bee venom causes swelling, with burning, stinging pain. When given in a very small homeopathic dose, the substance that would cause a symptom (swelling due to bee sting) in a person who is well, cures the same symptom (swelling due to allergic reaction) in a person who is not well.

When a child has severe food allergies the world is a scary place. Birthday parties and children’s playgrounds become danger zones. The hands of other children who have eaten common snacks and innocently touched toys and playground equipment, leave behind deadly food residue that can be life-threatening to children with food allergies.  Parents and grandparents must always be on high alert.

When a child has food allergies that can cause anaphylaxis, the world is a scary place. Apis mellifica helps make it not so scary!

I am so thankful for homeopathic Apis mellifica! Because of it, my granddaughter can live a much more normal life and her parents and grandparents can confidently keep her safe!

The Gateway to Homeopathy study group curriculum is a great way to learn homeopathy! I lead several guided study groups a year. Contact me for more information if you are interested in joining my next guided study group.

I recently had the honor and privilege of sharing my homeopathy story on the Mom’s With Moxie Podcast. The interview is Podcast 109 – Symptoms as a Gift and a Guide. You can listen to the interview here.

If you have a child or know a child with food allergies, you need to learn about homeopathic Apis mellifica!
