Listen, my son!
Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!
Proverbs 31 was written by a mother, the mother of King Lemuel. This letter from mother to son reflects her heart.
The words are filled with urgency and emotion.
I used to think that Proverbs 31 was a formula for living. I looked at it like a checklist of things I needed to strive for to be a godly woman. I now see it as a letter from a mother to her child. It is a plea for him to avoid the pain and heartbreak of bad decisions. I imagine that much of what she tells him is based on her own experiences and observations. Like all mothers, she has probably made mistakes and she probably has some regrets. Her heart’s desire is to bless her child by sharing the wisdom that she has gained from experience.
I hear her saying, “I’ve learned some things along the way. Make good choices!”
